Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social values contained in the short story “Rumah yang Terang” by Ahmad Tohari using a literary sociology approach. Literature is a reflection of people’s lives that records social reality and the values that live in it. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with Wellek and Warren's literary sociology approach. The primary data source is the short story “Rumah yang Terang” from the collection of short stories Senyum Karyamin (1989), while secondary data comes from previous theory and research books. The data collection technique was carried out through observation and notes, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model which included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the short story "Rumah yang Terang" contains nine social values, namely: (1) devotion, (2) mutual assistance, (3) kinship, (4) social concern, (5) discipline, (6) empathy, (7) justice, (8) tolerance, (9) cooperation. These values reflect the social dynamics of rural Javanese society and illustrate the conflict between traditional values and modernization pressures. The story shows a contrast between the strong devotion and kinship values of the main character and the fading of mutual assistance and tolerance values in the social environment. This research contributes to the development of literary sociology studies in Indonesia and enriches understanding of the role of literary works in shaping and reflecting society’s social values.
